The artist John McDougal was born in Edge Hill, Liverpool on 31 March 1852. He went to Wavertree Academy but
did not formally train as an artist. McDougal specialised in watercolour landscapes, exhibiting pictures of marine subjects
for many years at the Liverpool Academy, the Liverpool Autumn Exhibitions (from 1875) and the Royal Academy London (from 1877).
He was president of the Liverpool Society of Painters in Watercolours for the last two years of its existence and Treasurer of
the Liverpool Academy for about 13 years. He was also a member of the Royal Cambrian Academy and lived for much of his life at
Cemaes Bay, Anglesey.
