A dock where a ship can be repaired. Once the ship is in the dock the water can be pumped out, giving the repairer access to areas that would have been underwater. When the ship needs to leave the water is allowed back into the dock. 'Graving' means 'scratching' ­ somewhere you went to scratch off barnacles, rust etc.
