Leaving from Liverpool

Arrival

The wind and waves took us backwards and forwards, and it took us hours to dock. We eventually arrived in Sydney after 81 days. From the ship it looked a rather small, hilly, and quite ugly looking town, with short bare trees and rocks. I later learnt that there are some good, clean streets, buildings and a post office.

People rushed to leave the ship – as if a minute saved now will make a difference. On shore there was confusion, joy and sadness – unlike some others we have no one to welcome us to this new land. People wander, looking as lost as they did in Liverpool. I will find the agent’s office and seek a place to bury my son.
