Arrival

Joseph died during the night. Sarah is overwhelmed and clings to William. The captain wanted to send Joseph into the sea but the surgeon persuaded him to let us bury him on land.

I try to stay on deck; the routine is comforting. A pilot and an official looking man came on board. The man spoke with the captain and surgeon – I think we’ll escape quarantine so at least I can bury my son.

	Pilot The pilot knew the waters along that stretch of coast and would have guided the ship into harbour at Sydney. The official looking man is an immigration officer. He would decide if the boat should be kept in quarantine. Close
