Small marine invertebrate animals which are close relatives of sea anemonies. They mainly live in colonies, forming massive reefs from their calcium carbonate skeletons, eg the Great Barrier Reef of Australia. They start life as a tiny swimming larva - the size of a pinhead. The larva settles on a hard surface, like a rock, and begins to grow. It will never move from that spot again.
