The Sargasso Sea is a relatively calm, oval area of water in the western Atlantic Ocean, between the West Indies and the Azores. It covers an area of about two million square miles wide. It is named after the seaweed that floats there which Portuguese sailors thought looked like grapes - 'sargaco' which is the Portuguese word for grape.
