Kiribati (pronounced Kiribas) consists of 33 low-lying coral islands in the central Pacific Ocean. It is divided into three main groups: the Line Islands, the Phoenix Islands and the Gilbert Islands (of which there are 16 islands). Kiribati is northeast of Australia and about half way between there and Hawaii. The islands were once part of the British Empire but are now self-governing.
